Summer
Term in Year 6
The children in year 6 have been extremely busy since Easter.
They have been preparing for their Sats, taken in May. During
the week they have to complete two Science papers, two writing
tasks, a spelling test, reading comprehension, two maths papers
and a mental arithmetic test. As you can imagine we are all
exhausted!
In their
"spare" time the year 6 have worked with Mr Stok learning
about Britain since 1948. The adults really enjoyed looking
at the Kays catalogue from 1973! Their performance on the Ukuleles
was terrific at the Music Spectacular. They enjoyed dressing
up as a character from a book during World Book Day.
The transition
to Secondary school has begun. The children have taken part
in a treasure hunt at Huish Episcopi and they are about to work
on transition units in Maths, English and Science.
Year 6
are really looking forward to their leavers' trip and to the
service in the Church at the end of their time at High Ham.
They have been a fantastic class to teach and I wish them well
in their new schools.
Spring Term in Willow
Another busy time of the year for year 6. We had a fantastic
time winning the south west regional Lego robotics and taking
part in the National Final in Birmingham. (See project
page for more details)
We are really enjoying the history work on World War 2. We were
evacuated to the village hall and Mr Stok from the museum service
worked with us for the day bringing aspects of the era to life.
At Christmas we took part in the CLP carol concert, playing
our Ukuleles. We are now rehearsing for the South Somerset Music
Spectacular. Santa's on Strike was a huge success; we had lots
of fun practicing but are still waiting for the Oscars!!
In Literacy we are writing arguments and instructions. We have
enjoyed working with Mr Hyland and Mrs Tiller (GTP students)
Autumn
Term in Willow
The children
in Willow have had a really great start to the year. The residential
to Pinkery Outdoor Education Centre was a huge success; we had
a fantastic time, rock climbing, abseiling, walking, zip lining,
dam building and generally getting along with our friends for
five whole days!
This tern
our main topic will be thinking about what it was like for a
child during the Second World War. We are planning an evacuation
to the Village Hall and many other exciting activities. A lot
of the Literacy, History and Design and Technology work will
be focusing on this topic.
Taunton
SETPOINT are coming to school to introduce the children to computer
control. We are going to enter the Lego Robotics competition
again in November.
The year
6 children are really excited about their music lessons with
Mrs Murton. It is a great opportunity for the children to learn
how to play a musical instrument, especially the Ukulele. I'm
looking forward to hearing them play at the end of the Summer
Term!!!
