On
Monday 11th September years 5 and 6 left High Ham and headed
towards Exmoor for five days of outdoor activities. After
unpacking and lunch year 5 we set off across the moor towards
The Chains. Due to the beautiful weather we were able to see
for miles. On the return leg of the journey we saw the tunnel
near Pinkery Pond that we would go through later in the week.
Year 6 stayed at the centre and tried their hand at archery
with Mr Bailey (head of the centre) and also took to their
bikes for a spot of Mountain biking with Matt.
Later we re-fuelled on cake and a drink before the next activity
began, dam building in the stream. The dam building proved
rather wet and muddy for some!
Tuesday began with a hearty breakfast of sausages, beans,
egg, toast and cereal. This set us in good stead for the zip
lining at Coombe Martin. It was rather windy and the waves
were crashing down below us. Our hearts pounded and we were
rather "terrified", although very proud of ourselves
when finished. We were really pleased that all the children
had a go and even some of the parent helpers. Whilst rock
pooling we found some interesting creatures and shells.
It
was good to welcome the second group of year 5 on Wednesday
morning. The walk to Cow Castle was exhausting but it was
well worth the effort when we reached the summit. We used
the River Barle as part of our Geography work, kick sampling,
calculating the water flow and measuring the river. If we
hadn't walked far enough, we headed off again to Pinkery pond
so that we could all go through the tunnel. After a delicious
BBQ the first group of year 5's left.
The weather was not too good on Thursday so we stayed at the
centre for the morning and did archery, mountain biking, orienteering
and map work. We also designed and made boats to hols small
stones. In the afternoon we walked along the route of the
Lyne flood. After more dam building and after a rather late
supper we headed off again for a short night walk.
We were all sad when we woke on the Friday as this was our
last day. We tried our boats in the stream and tested our
skills on the assault course before heading home exhausted!!
