World War II - January 2008

Mr Toby Stok from the Somerset Museum service worked for a day with each class in Key Stage 2. He came dressed in authentic uniform and the children wore their evacuation clothes. During the day the children took part in numerous activities bringing the Second World War to life. They looked closely at a range of gas masks and two children were blindfolded and had to put a baby into a special gas mask. - Unfortunately the baby was put in the wrong way round!! Other activities included making identity cards and using ration books. Outside they marched and had a go using the stirrup pump. At the end of the day Mr Stok let the children handle a rifle and they were able to see a grenade. Everyone had a fantastic day and it was great to see the children so animated about their history work.

James thought it was a much better day than normal school.

“I thought the day was really fun, I especially liked the stirrup pump.” Daisy.

Laura said, “ I like dressing up and I thought the gramophones were interesting.”
