Young Carers in Schools

Young Carers in Schools

At High Ham C of E Primary School, we recognise the invaluable contributions that young carers make within their families. We understand that some of our pupils may take on additional responsibilities, which can often impact their educational experience.

In our commitment to ensuring that all pupils achieve their best and thrive in our school environment, we are actively working towards achieving the Young Carers in Schools Award. This initiative aims to enhance our support for these pupils, providing them with the necessary resources and understanding to help mitigate the challenges they face.

By fostering an inclusive atmosphere, we aspire to enable young carers to attend and enjoy school alongside their peers, ensuring they have the opportunity to realise their full potential.

How will we achieve this?

  • The whole school is committed to meeting the needs of our young carers so they can attend and enjoy school in the same ways as their peers.
  • Mrs Edwards is our designated Young Carers’ Senior Lead and she is supported by Mrs Healey. You can contact them through the main school office – 01458 250735; office@highhamcofe.co.uk
  • The school will only share information with professionals and agencies to support our pupils and families identified as young carers with their permission.
  • We will actively seek feedback and ideas from our young carers and their families in order to shape and improve the support we offer.
  • We will ensure that we have an effective referral and strong partnership with the relevant external agencies, including referral to Young Carer agencies.

What is a Young Carer?

A young carer is someone, under the age of 18, who is caring, unpaid, for a family member or a friend who is ill, disabled, or has a mental health problem or addiction.

They often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. Research suggests there are at least 800,000 young carers in the UK but many do not realise they are a young carer.

We know that young carers may need a little extra support to enjoy and do well at school. We are committed to ensuring that all students who are young carers are identified, and supported effectively.

Please speak to Mrs Edwards or your child’s class teacher if you would like more information regarding young carers at High Ham.
